Older homes need a lighter hand
An original hardwood floor from 1962 does not want a wet mop or a harsh cleaner. Neither do old tile counters, painted cabinets, or the varnished trim that came with the house. We use as little water as the job allows on wood, work with the grain, and save the strong products for porcelain and grout, where they belong. Older bathrooms often have tile that is perfectly sound sitting above grout that is tired, so we clean that grout without scrubbing it away. Point out anything delicate or sentimental on day one and we leave it alone or do it your way.
Window frames, condensation and the mildew that follows
In the older parts of Carrollton, aging windows sweat all winter. The water runs down to the bottom of the frame and sits there, and by February you have black speckling in the corner and a musty smell in the room. We wipe out the tracks, dry the sills and get into the corners with a brush rather than a cloth, because a cloth just rides over the top. Same story in bathrooms with an extractor fan older than the children using it. Catching it every couple of weeks stops it becoming a job for a painter.
Dust mites live in bedrooms, not on countertops

Newer homes out toward Rosemeade
The newer Carrollton neighborhoods bring a different list. Open-plan kitchens send cooking grease further than anyone expects, onto cabinet fronts, the range hood and the wall behind the cooktop. Tall entry ceilings collect cobwebs where nobody ever looks. Big carpeted areas need real vacuuming rather than a quick pass. And the patio door is the busiest piece of glass in the house once there are kids or a dog. We can, though let us be honest about what it achieves. While sanding or cutting is going on, dust is back within hours. What helps is cleaning the rooms you are actually living in and keeping them shut off, then a full top-to-bottom once the trades have packed up. That final clean is the one worth paying for: vents, light fixtures, inside cabinets, window glass, and floors last.
